Fundraising for cause areas including:
Men's health
Mental health and suicide prevention

Mental health doesn’t discriminate. It can affect everyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, socio-economic status. It can take on many forms.

As I mature and witness the world evolve, I realise how important it is to share our stories. Whilst my story doesn't reflect that typically associated with successful individuals (especially corporate lawyers), I am not ashamed of it.

I grew up in a low-middle income family. Dad was an alcoholic who battled his demons. Mum, a victim of domestic violence, worked hard to support our family and suffered almost in silence with her mental anguish. I was fortunate that people recognised me for my academic, sporting, musical and leadership talents and gave me a shot. But not everyone is so lucky.

After dad passed away, I was not in a good place. I was sad; angry; even aggressive. I relocated and tried something different, which helped for a while. I then entered the high pressure world of private legal practice. Whilst the hours were intense (as a trainee I billed 20 hours straight over a mothers days weekend), it wasn’t that which killed me. It was the fact that my story did not fit that of others who filled the seats. People didn’t want to hear it, and I was treated differently. This lead to my first clinical diagnosis of depression and anxiety. I started seeing a psychiatrist and was prescribed anti-depressants and even Ritalin. The antidepressants caused me to sweat profusely; the Ritalin caused me to grind my teeth. I eventually tried another sea change, which helped. That workplace was supportive and recognised me for who I am. And I haven’t looked back since. But I’ve lost people along the way: A seemingly happy and successful colleague who threw himself in front of a passing train; my husband’s mate who was seemingly back on track then hung himself; a friend who dappled one too many times in substances to find happiness, only to overdose; my sister’s soulmate who threw himself off the cliffs at Bells Beach during a lockdown in March this year because it was all too much and he didn't want to trouble people with his demons. And there’s more who I know of. If sharing my story and helping to raise awareness and funds for the cause of mental health helps, then I am only too happy to find time.

I know many people are already supporting Movember by participating in the challenges, or sponsoring others. I also know that not everyone has money to spare.

If you can, I encourage you to like and donate to #Movember efforts and support men's health. No contribution is too small #moveformovember #moveformentalhealth
